Leverage the Power of Storytelling in Business

Tony Hsieh, the legendary founder of Zappos (an online shoe retailer) which is famous for their obsessive customer service culture. This is the "pizza story" that Tony would frequently tell:

One night after a long day of meetings, Tony Hsieh and his team were hanging out in a hotel in Santa Monica, California. A few people in the group were hungry , but the hotel kitchen had closed for the night. One friend, who was not part of the Zappos team, joked "hey, you keep talking about Zappos exceptional service. We should see if Zappos will send us a pizza."
Tony winked and said, "why don't you call Zappos customer service and find out?"

So the guy called Zappos' 24/7 customer service line, despite knowing that Zappos sold shoes, not food. The customer service representative answered the phone, and Tony's friend said (as Tony listened in), "I'm staying at a hotel in Santa Monica, and I really want to order a pizza. Can you help me?"
Instead of dismissing the request or saying it wasn't Zappos' business, the representative said, "I'm happy to help you with that." After putting the caller on hold for a few minutes, the Zappos representative came back with a list of local pizza places and said "would you like for me to have one of those deliver the pizza to your hotel?" within 30 minutes, the team was enjoying a freshly delivered pepperoni pizza.

What you will learn in this short course

Stories inspire people to take action. It's the secret sauce for leading with impact. Here's how storytelling skills can help you transform your workplace.

Communicate clearly and confidently

Ever struggle to get your ideas across? Storytelling helps you take complex concepts and turn them into something clear, relatable, and memorable—whether you're talking to your team or pitching to clients.

Connect emotionally with others

People remember stories, not just data or facts. When you tell a story, you create an emotional connection, which is key to engaging your team, customers, or stakeholders on a deeper level.

Strengthen your team’s collaboration

Stories bring people together. Sharingexperiences—both successes and failures—helps foster empathy and create a sense of shared purpose, which builds a stronger, more collaborative team culture.

Lead with influence

In business, influence is everything. Whether you’re in a meeting, a negotiation, or leading a project, storytelling gives you the edge to convince others, build trust, and rally support around your ideas.

What is a sprint? Is it the same as a course?

A sprint (or “learning sprint”) is what we call our individual culture skills training units or a short course.

Each sprint contains gamified self-paced learning materials, an interactive live group practice session, and six weeks of five-minute follow-up “mini-missions” to help ensure lasting behavioral change.

CultureUp now offers 7 sprints with more to come. A sprint can be completed as a standalone course or as part of a curriculum or bundle. See the sprint catalog for more details.

Can anyone enroll in a CultureUp sprint?

CultureUp is a B2B product. Our learning sprints are built for teams, empowering middle managers and their teams to collaborate on building essential culture skills, drive measurable behavior change, and scale workplace transformation across organization.

How much time should I spend on the sprint per week?

Aside from the mini missions, that’s entirely up to you. The self-paced portion of the sprint can be completed in one session that should take 60-90 minutes. Or, you can complete the modules one at a time as your schedule allows.

Once you’ve completed the self-paced learning portion, or you can schedule your expert-facilitated live practice session, which has a 120-minute duration.  (Pilot is 60 minutes)

After participating in the practice session, you’ll receive mini missions to complete to help make your new skills stick. This portion of the sprint will require five minutes of daily practice over six weeks.

At this time, CultureUp is focused on delivering effective, team-based learning sprints and practical resources designed to empower your managers and teams.
